Ch 11-03 Evolution of High-Mass Stars
- Stars of MS mass larger than about 8 M⊙ can have carbon/neon burning and further stages of nuclear fusion.
Elements up to iron (56Fe) are created.
- Mass-loss from a supergiant
- Core-collapse supernova explosion
Contraction of the iron core
photodisintergration: γ+Fe --> α's
electron capture: p+e- --> n+ν
Formation of a neutron-rich core
Core bounce
The energy content is about 1053erg; EM waves carry only about 1%.
Elements havier than iron are produced (this is the only way to create them!)
